About Us
Try The Train is a fully funded initiative from Northern Trains, designed to build confidence and independence in rail travel.
The programme includes three tailored workshops and two supported rail journeys for groups of 8 to 12 people, aged 14 and over. Each workshop builds key skills around rail safety, journey planning, and using the train network, with each rail trip offering a chance to put that learning into practice.
Participants will be gradually supported to become more independent, with the Try The Train facilitator stepping back over time as confidence grows. By the second journey, participants are encouraged to plan and carry out the trip themselves, with the facilitator on hand for reassurance if needed.
Workshops will also explore sustainable travel options to and from stations, and each participant will receive a personalised information pack with route details, timings, and practical guidance.
This is a hands-on, supportive way to help people feel more confident travelling by train—and to explore the wider benefits of public and sustainable transport.
We are excited to announce that Try The Train was a finalist in the National Rail Awards 2025. The project was Highly Commended in the Accessibility Achievement of the year category.

Try The Train was shortlisted for a Community Rail Award in 2023/4
